Due to Katy ISD’s policy restricting fliers in the school weekly take-home folders, many parents do not know where to find out information on scouting which means enrollment has decreased in the area.  The schools will not tell you about local activities for kids in the area.  Check out Katy ISD’s Parent link for more information about after-school activities.

I am trying to find/form a pack for my 6-year-old son in the north Katy area.  If your child attends school  north of I-10 and you would like him (your family) to get involved in scouting, please leave a comment or reach me here:  plummymom1 at s b c g l o b a l (dot) n e t.

Houston-Katy Area Prepares For Animal Planet Event August 9th and 10th

Today we passed Cullen Park on Saums Road and my kids started squealing about the Animal Planet Expo tents going up in the park.
The free Animal Planet Expo opens this weekend at 10am on Saturday and Sunday at Cullen Park. The park is located on the west side of Houston.
Here is the address for those who use Google:
19008 Saums Road
Houston, TX 77084
Here are a few websites you can check out for more infomation about the local event:
Hopefully, the weather will hold up and there will not be the isolated thunderstorms in the area as predicted by the weather people. Not that my kids care about a little bit of water standing in the way of a moonwalk.
The last picture is a shot of the road that leads from Mayde Creek High School to Cullen Park on Saums Road.
You might want to park your car at the school and bike to the event.
Be careful about parking at the new, empty strip center located south of the park on Barker Cypress because they towed cars last year.

Cullen Park

My family and I attended the fun event last year since it was only 3 miles from our house.   You are allowed to bring your dog or cat to the park as long as it is on a leash (no cat with any self respect would ever be on a leash).  This is the kind of event where kids will have a good time and you get to save money.  Bring your backpack with snacks and lots of cool water.

The parking is free but the trick is to find a parking spot.  Your best bet is to  drop off an adult with the kiddies, park at Mayde Creek High School and walk/bike through the park to the event.  Be careful where you park because last year cars were towed.  Also, the event takes place on grass so bring your big wheeled stroller.

Cullen park is located  on Barker Cypress about 25 minutes from downtown Houston on I-10 right after you pass the exit for Highway 6 heading out towards Katy.

Free Family Boat Ride in Houston

Not Houston

Note: The photos above and below are courtesy of Dreamstime.com and is not an actual picure of the boat you would be riding on.

The Port of Houston offers free boat tours including a free beverage at the Houston Ship Channel.

The vessel, M/V Sam Houston, is available for a 90 minute boat tour Tuesday-Sunday at 10:00 a.m. and 2:30 p.m not a three-hour tour.
You can register online at anytime or call 713-670-2416.

You and your family will get the opportunity to tour one of the busiest international ports in the world in a air-conditioned enclosed viewing area of the boat.

I have not had the opportunity to take the tour but I will put it on my short list of family things to do in the fall when the Houston weather cools down. If you and your family do get a chance to take the tour, please drop me a comment or a line about your experience.

Also, the Port of Houston plans to open a cruise terminal next year for the big boats.

Free Golf Lessons For Houston Kids…Be A Tiger

The First Tee of Houston   offers free golf lessons for kids aged 7-18 years at 8400 Mykawa Rd, Houston, TX, 77048, 713-264-2100.

My daughter, Miss Tigerette Woods,  learned to hit a golf ball last summer while attending golf classes at the First Tee of Houston.

The First Tee requires registered parents and kids to attend all 6 sessions plus parents must attend an orientation prior to the start of class.

The First Tee teaches kids about respect for yourself, respect for others and respect for your surroundings.

The class we attended was on a Saturday morning and everyone was very hot but the kids did not seem to mind.  I think that when kids are having fun they are able to block out minor inconveniences and focus.

WARNING:  The sessions are most likely full for the summer but you can check with them about fall sessions or even about next year’s summer session.

Free Art For Kids at Houston Museum of Fine Art…Families Stay Cool and Cultured This Summer

The Houston Museum of Fine Arts or http://mfah.org has free admission on Thursdays. Stay cool this summer!

Last summer my kids and I not only got a chance to tour the MFAH for free but we also participated in Creation Station where they made clay animals.

Park behind one of the other museums in the district, save money and walk across the street.

The museum is located at

1001 Bissonnet Street
Houston, TX 77005
713.639.7300

The admission does not include the Pompeii exhibit ticket which costs $8 to $10 for a ticket.

Creation Station is a drop-in art-making activity from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm on Thursdays and Sundays where families can drop-in and create art inspired by the museum exhibits. Kids can create sculptures, paintings, prints and photography in the studio located inside the museum.

This Thursday, June 19th the kids will be making scrolls and learning Chinese brush-strokes in the Beck building. Click here for a schedule of Creation Station activities.

Katy Mills Mall In Houston, TX Is The Place To Find A Webkinz

Here are a few photos of the always interesting Katy Mills Mall  located in Katy, Texas 30 miles west of Houston.

I enjoyed a couple of hours looking for my son a Large Toad Webkinz in Katy Mills Mall today.

I want you to know that there are at least 5 stores in the mall that stock the small and large Webkinz online stuffed toy game.    The prices ranged from $9.99 to $18.99.  There was also a Webkinz claw machine in the food court for .50 cents [you know that little machine that has the claw and you get one big grab].

I did have a little trouble understanding that one could not locate Webkinz at W-mart.  One place to start searching for your own little Webkinz is on the the Ganz Locator Website.

I originaly visited Toys-r-not-us but they have changed from the Webkinz line as listed on their website to the “Star Light” line.  Thanks for letting me know this before I dove out into the Houston heat to the store which is located next door to the Katy Mills Mall.

Katy Mills Mall is not the place to go on the weekend  with kids under the age of 25 if you live only 12 minutes away [as I do] only because there are so many tourists visiting the mall on the weekends.   There is a rockwall, carousel,  free children’s play area, gaming center and extra large food court in the middle of the mall.
