Best Houston Family Magazines

Houston Family Magazine

Houston Family Magazine

Parents, if you are looking for daycare, after-school activities or family fun resources then run down to Kroger’s or Fiesta and pick up “Houston Family Magazine” and “Katy Parent”  Magazine.  The magazines are free and the content also can be accessed online at Houston Family Magazine and Katy Parent Magazine.

Every month in Houston Family Magazine there is a contest sponsered by the magazine to win the month’s in-demand children’s item.  This month the magazine features a contest where families can enter for a chance to win two DVD movies.  Go to http://www.houstonfamilymagazine.com for your chance to win “The Great Wall’ and “The Chinese Market” DVDs.   In addition, there is the opportunity to win a family four-pack of passes to a special screening of “Monsters Vs. Aliens”.     The February issue of HFM also includes a camp directory for those parents who are already thinking about activities for their kids during the summer months.  If you do not have time to run by a grocery story and pick up a free copy, you can purchase a subscription for 12 months or 24 months.

Katy Parent Magazine

Katy Parent Magazine is also a free magazine packed with tons of fun family stuff to do in Katy as well as the Houston area.  I found my children’s dentist Dr. Ingrid Duebbert of Kingsland dental group, P.A.  in the Katy Parent.  Every month the magazine lists a Fun-Time Calendar with events, prices, times and locations around town.  There are plenty of discounts for parents with the “Mention This Ad” tag for activities like “Times Square Entertainment” on the Grand Parkway.  The magazine does a great job of listing events and daycare centers that are located  in and near the Katy area.

Parents want their kids in the scouts but due to Katy ISD’s “no flyer” policy many parents do not have a clue about community activities in the area.  Please spread the word about the scouting event to other families in the Houston area.

If you missed the event, then please contact the people below for more information.

Due to Katy ISD’s policy restricting fliers in the school weekly take-home folders, many parents do not know where to find out information on scouting which means enrollment has decreased in the area.  The schools will not tell you about local activities for kids in the area.  Check out Katy ISD’s Parent link for more information about after-school activities.

I am trying to find/form a pack for my 6-year-old son in the north Katy area.  If your child attends school  north of I-10 and you would like him (your family) to get involved in scouting, please leave a comment or reach me here:  plummymom1 at s b c g l o b a l (dot) n e t.

Free Family Boat Ride in Houston

Not Houston

Note: The photos above and below are courtesy of Dreamstime.com and is not an actual picure of the boat you would be riding on.

The Port of Houston offers free boat tours including a free beverage at the Houston Ship Channel.

The vessel, M/V Sam Houston, is available for a 90 minute boat tour Tuesday-Sunday at 10:00 a.m. and 2:30 p.m not a three-hour tour.
You can register online at anytime or call 713-670-2416.

You and your family will get the opportunity to tour one of the busiest international ports in the world in a air-conditioned enclosed viewing area of the boat.

I have not had the opportunity to take the tour but I will put it on my short list of family things to do in the fall when the Houston weather cools down. If you and your family do get a chance to take the tour, please drop me a comment or a line about your experience.

Also, the Port of Houston plans to open a cruise terminal next year for the big boats.

Free Kids Tennis Lessons…..At Houston Area Parks

The City of Houston, Texas provides

 free tennis

lessons during the 2008 summer months at various city parks.  My kids took lessons five days a week last summer.  They even provide a tennis raquet.   At the end of the summer there is a city-wide tennis tournament at Memorial Park.

Always Free Art Museum in Houston, TX For Kids …Contemporary Arts Museum

Visit the Contemporary Arts Museum of Houston in the big steel building next to Herman Park:  http://www.camh.org/

Last summer my kids and I visited this always free museum located at 5216 Montrose, 713-284-8250.

It is so surprising that my kids got a chance to be exposed to different types of art for free.    I think they learned to value the drawings and colorings they do in a different light.  I even created a museum in a wall in our home to display my kids artwork from school and home.

The museum is a great place to visit especially on a hot summer day.  The museum is located two blocks south of  Houston’s  Children’s Museum.
